Fresh Sheet: iBooks 2, Facebook Actions, Chevy Game Time App

The Fresh Sheet is Work at Play's weekly selection of the best news. In this issue: Apple tackles interactive textbooks, Facebook introduces Actions and Chevrolet takes the Superbowl mobile.

Apple's Tools for Education

Ever since the introduction of the first iPad, it's potential for teaching and learning has been excitedly discussed. Apple brought that discussion to life, announcing on Thursday a set of new educational tools designed to help both students and teachers. iBooks 2 is the platform that will deliver the textbooks and iBooks Author is the program that will allow virtually anyone to create them.  iTunes U will allow teachers to upload podcasts for their students to either stream live or download for later. There is still a long way to go, and a lot of work to be done, to properly meld traditional ways of teaching with more interactive, technology driven ones. This is just the first kick at the can. But it sure is exciting to see the experimentation that is happening in the educational space.

Facebook Actions Start To Roll Out

The end of an era is drawing near. "Like" is being phased out at Facebook. Never has one four letter word meant so many things to so many different people. As announced back at F8, Facebook is expanding its lexicon. Users will soon be able to express themselves through a variety of different terms such as "want" or "own". Just this past week, Facebook announced that it had partnered with 60 different companies such as Ticketmaster and TripAdvisor to start introducing its new Actions into the everyday life of its users.  While the full transition won't occur until everyone has been fully switched over to the Timeline layout, look for your Facebook vocabulary to get a much needed expansion in the coming weeks.

Chevy Looks to Rev Up Superbowl Engagement

Chevrolet is a big advertiser for the Superbowl. They took notice of the amount of action that took place on Twitter during last years event, and decided they were going to try and grab a piece of that active engagement for themselves. Good for them for thinking outside the TV box. By downloading the Chevy Game Time App to your mobile device, you will automatically receive a unique "licence plate" code. If your licence plate code happens to match a licence place on one of the cars in the commercials that Chevrolet will also be showing during the Superbowl, you will win that car. How's that for download incentive. Thousands of other prizes are also up for grabs, simply by participating in the polls, trivia and impromptu contests that will be running on the app throughout the Superbowl.
